I'm sure you are well aware of the fact that being able to communicate in today's complex world can mean the difference between becoming a success or just getting by in life. The problem is that overcrowded high schools are graduating students simply because they cannot afford to keep them in school. These graduates have not mastered the skill of written communication. The truth is, this has been going on a lot longer than you may think.
More than 30 years ago, when I was a junior in college, a freshman moved into my dorm. When he heard that I was a journalism student, he asked me if I would look over an essay that he had written for an English class. I could not believe how poorly the paper was written. It was then I did something that I still regret to this day. I rewrote that paper and every paper he had that semester. He was a D student in English, but he got a B for the semester. When he had to write something in class, he would tell the teacher that his papers were not as good because he was nervous about writing under a time constraint. I did not do this young student any good by writing his papers.
Being able to communicate by the written word is more important than ever before. The Internet has brought a new form of communication to the business world. The e-mail has become a staple of the modern office. Your success or failure in life will depend, in large part, on your ability to communicate with the written word. I cannot emphasize enough how important this skill is to your future.
